Body fat is estimated from BMI, age and sex. It is not a clinical measurement and can differ a lot from DEXA or other tests.
Energy estimates
- Estimated BMR
- —
- Estimated maintenance calories
- —
BMR is the energy your body uses at rest (Mifflin-St Jeor equation). Maintenance calories multiply BMR by your activity level. Both are estimates.
South Asian context
The categories above are the standard adult BMI categories. Some clinical and public-health guidance uses lower BMI action points (for example, increased risk from around 23) for people of Asian descent, because metabolic risk can rise at lower BMI. This varies between individuals and guidelines. It is context only, not a diagnosis — ask a healthcare professional what applies to you.

How BMI is calculated
Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
How to interpret your BMI
Compare your result with the categories above. A BMI in the healthy range is generally associated with lower risk of weight-related conditions, while a result outside it is a prompt to look at other factors such as waist size, diet, activity and family history.
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, does not show where fat is stored, and is not validated the same way for children, pregnant women, very muscular people or older adults. Use it as one screening tool alongside other measures and professional advice.
BMI is a screening measure and does not directly measure body fat or diagnose health conditions. Results should be interpreted in context and are not a substitute for professional medical advice.
