About this word counter
Paste or type into the editor above and the counts update as you go. Beyond words and characters, it reports sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, average word and sentence length, estimated syllables and pages, and estimated reading, speaking and handwriting time. You can track a writing goal or a character limit, check keyword density and repeated phrases, compare your text with SEO and social media length guidelines, and clean, convert or search and replace text without leaving the page.
Language support and limits
Pick one of 30 languages so words are found with that language’s Unicode rules. Chinese, Japanese and Thai are written without spaces, so their word counts rely on dictionary-based segmentation and are approximate. Syllable estimates exist only for languages with a built-in rule, and the reading-level estimate is for English only. Mixed-language text is counted with the rules of the language you selected. Accuracy is not identical across languages.
Privacy
Counting and analysis run in your browser. Your text is not sent anywhere unless you sign in and choose to save a document to your account. Optional auto-save keeps a draft in this browser only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use the Word Counter?
Type or paste text into the editor. The totals above and the Details panel update immediately. Use the toolbar to change case, find and replace, clean pasted text, upload a plain-text file or download your work.
How are words and characters counted?
Words are found with Unicode word-boundary rules, so accented and non-Latin letters are handled. A hyphenated compound such as “well-known” counts as one word in space-separated languages. Characters include spaces, punctuation and line breaks, and an emoji or accented letter counts as one character. Select any row in the Details panel to read how it is calculated.
Can I count words in multiple languages?
Yes. Choose the language in the selector. Languages without spaces between words use dictionary-based segmentation, which is approximate. Text that mixes languages is counted with the rules of the language you chose.
Is this Word Counter completely free?
Yes. Every feature is free and no account is needed to count words. An account is only used if you want to save documents to the website.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No, not by default. Analysis happens in your browser. If you turn on auto-save, a draft is kept in this browser’s local storage and you can delete it in Options. If you are signed in and press save, that document is stored privately in your account on this website until you delete it.
How do I check keyword density?
The Keyword density panel lists your most frequent terms for single words (x1) and for two- and three-word phrases (x2, x3). Density is the number of occurrences divided by the total number of words in your text. Common words are filtered out unless you include them, and you can track your own keywords in the Keyword table tab.
How do I calculate reading and speaking time?
Reading and speaking time are your word count divided by a words-per-minute rate. The defaults are adjustable in Options because people read and speak at very different speeds. Treat the results as estimates.
